The Panama Canal Authority has issued Advisory to Shipping No. A-32-2022, requiring Neopanamax vessels to be equipped with equipment approved by the Panama Canal Authority when passing through the Panama Canal after the commencement of the regulation.
Outline of the Regulation: The Panama Canal Authority approved ※1 Fixed (non-portable) piloting unit with Real Time Kinematics (RTK)※2 will be mandatory.
※1: Currently only one company (Trelleborg) (Approved equipment)
※2: A positioning system in which two receivers, a fixed station (on land) and a mobile station (on the ship), receive signals from sanitary sources and exchange information between the two receivers to compensate for misalignments and obtain highly accurate position information.
Applicable vessels: Vessels of 109 feet (33.22 m as Extream breadth) or more*.
※ In the case of bulk carriers, vessels larger than K'max are considered to be applicable.
Applicable date: From October 1, 2023
If a fixed piloting unit with RTK is not installed, a portable piloting unit with RTK will be required to be installed temporarily before the Transiting Panama Canal and additional costs will be charged. The cost and the number of portable piloting units with RTK to be prepared are not disclosed at this time.
