We have previously reported in our article that, effective October 1, 2023, the installation of a positioning system will become mandatory for vessels of 109 feet or more in width navigating the Panama Canal.

Panama Canal Authority(ACP) has issued Advisory to Shipping A-32-2023 and FAQs about the positioning system. Please be noted,
- One RTK system newly got approved by ACP. Now approved products are two, one is 'P3' manufactured by Trelleborg, another is 'CanalPilot' manufactured by Navicom Dynamics.
- Ships do not comply with this new requirement will be temporally installed a portable piloting unit with Real Time Kinematics (PPU-RTK). However, ACP encourages all customers to purchase and install the fix RTK, which cost and time are significantly less than the possible delay and rental cost.
- The rental cost for PPU-RTK has not yet announced. ACP will announce it prior Oct. 2023.
- Procedures are mentioned in advisory to shipping after installation of the fixed RTK.
