In order to prevent the inflow of possible radioactive ballast water into Korean waters
arising from discharge of treated wastewater from Fukushima nuclear powerplant, the
following measures are to be implemented.
Effective Date: 24 August 2023
The vessel subject to regulations: Vessels that are entering the ports of Republic of Korea
after uptaking ballast water in the ports belong to Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture,
Fukushima Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Ibaragi Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture in the
eastern coast of Japan.
Subject vessels which planning to discharge ballast waters at Korean port is required to exchange ballast water before entering Korea. Please refer attached file for more detail.

In addition, we hear news that some China ports have similar requirement though we do not find official notice. According to our source, the requirement is different by each port. It is advisable to ask your local agent when your ship call China with Japan Coast ballast water.

Panama Maritime Authority has issued Merchant Marine Notice MMN-07/2023 to communicate to all Ship-owners/Operators, Legal Representative of Panama Flag Vessels about the radioactivity prevention measures taken by Korea and China Governments as a result of the release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, which led to widespread protests.
