BHP issued Port Hedland Mooring Management Standard. This new Standard will be applied to all vessels and crew onboard calling at the BHP Port Hedland Terminal, from 15 Aug 2024.
Here are main changes from current standard.
Mooring Line
The following points have been newly added to the Standard.
- For vessel less than 120,000 DWT, mooring line MBL must meet the terminal’s risk assessment and port regulations, as applicable. There's no specific figures.
- Mooring lines on the vessel in the same service area must be uniform in all respects. This requirement is stated in current standard and permissible allowance is clearly mentioned in the new standard.
- Use of fit for purpose chafe protection on mooring lines or alternate means of protection is mandatory. ※
Mooring Winch Brake Rendering Test
- Mooring winch brake rendering limit must be set in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements OR vessel safety management requirements, OR regulatory requirements, but in no case less than 45 Tons.
※Pilbara Port authority issued circular that using chafe protection at Port Hedland is not recommended, which is conflict requirement with BHP standard. We are studying how to handle this matter.
