Shipowners decide to undergo RightShip Inspections for various reasons, such as vessel age, recovery of Safety Scores, or vetting requirements. Unfortunately, even after undergoing an inspection, the results may not always meet the expectations of the stakeholders.
On February 6th, RightShip held a webinar about RightShip Inspections. This webinar covered topics such as how to prepare before the inspection, the timeline leading up to the inspection, the results, and the corresponding validity periods.
While you can check the details in the webinar recording, here are some particularly important points:
1.Application Timeline
Recommended 14 days, with minimum timeframe of 7 days.
2.Inspection type
Hybrid Inspection (Recommended): Involves requested documents to be provided by managers at least 72 hours in advance. Typical duration on board is approx. 9 hours.
Standard : Covers all relevant scope during the physical inspection. Typical duration on board is up to 14 hours
Dual Inspection : Involves two inspectors. Typical duration on board is approximately 7 hours
3.Preparation
Step1:Superintendents should conduct visits and inspections based on RISQ criteria
Step2:Carry out internal audit Include RISQ requirements in the ship’s audit checklist
Step3:Familiarise Ship Personnel to arrange in-house training on RISQ Guide to Inspection. it is good to watch This Video, too.
Step4:Final preparation before 1 month.
4.What RightShip Inspection look for
Inspectors look for three P(Process, People, Plant)
Process:Ensures compliance with ISM Code (safety &operational consistency). About 52% (33,000 findings) were found in inspection due to lack of procedures (July 2023-July 2024)
People:Success depends on skilled, trained personnel who execute daily tasks. About 30% (21,000 findings) were found in inspection due to people (July 2023-July 2024)
Plant:Proper maintenance ensures vessel safety, efficiency, and personnel protection. About 40% (26,000 findings) were found in inspection due to maintenance (July 2023-July 2024)
5.Validity
The validity period of the inspection is determined based on the number and severity of the findings, ranging from 12 months to 3 months, or even 0 months. While it is important to reduce the number of findings, it is equally or even more crucial to avoid being classified with high-risk findings.
You can check the criteria of the validity here
6.High Risk findings
Findings classified as high-risk are those that pose an immediate threat to the safety of the vessel, crew, or environment. For example, these are the types of findings that could lead to detention during a PSC inspection. The attached slide on page 14 lists the top 7 frequently cited high-risk items, which can be useful for your self-inspections.
