BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance) released the Mooring Management Standard in 2021, and it has been in operation for the past four years.
BHP has released a new Mooring Management Standard for bulk carrier vessels calling at the Hay Point Coal Terminal.
Effective from 1 June 2025, the new requirements may require significant modifications to current mooring arrangements, especially for "Kamsarmax" vessels which were built with single drum winches on the cross-decks.
This revision is a mandatory requirement and will take precedence over all previous mooring standards issued by BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance)/BHP. Although implementation may be determined on a case-by-case basis, it is recommended to review the specifications of vessels expected to call at Hay Point.
A notable point in this revision is the stricter requirement regarding the number of drums used for mooring lines.
Vessels between 65,000 DWT and 120,000 DWT are required to have 12 mooring lines on drums, indicating that at least 12 winch drums must be installed.

=Summary of Key Changes:
▪ Additional Mooring Lines Required for some vessels (Deployed from Drums)
▪ Deployment of additional lines from warping heads and shifting them on bollards is no longer permitted.
All mooring lines must now be deployed from winch drums only. This will necessitate the installation of new winches on some vessels. Specifically, the following number of lines is to be deployed from mooring winch drums:
▪ 12 mooring lines for vessels with DWT between 65,000 and 120,000 tons
▪ 8 mooring lines for vessels with DWT between 50,000 and 65,000 tons
▪ 16 mooring lines for vessels with DWT above 120,000 tons
SWL of fittings, Ship Design MBL and MBL of lines used is to be checked as :
▪ MBL of mooring lines must be at least 75 Tons for vessels above 120,000 DWT
▪ MBL of mooring lines must be at least 60 Tons for vessels between 65,000 and 120,000 DWT
▪ MBL of mooring lines must meet regulatory requirements or 45 Tons, whichever is greater, for vessels between 50,000 and 65,000 DWT
▪ Mooring lines must be less than five years old from their certificate date, unless otherwise approved by the manufacturer.
▪ Uniformity is required in material, diameter, and type across all lines.
▪ Minimum breaking load compliance is mandatory.
▪ Chafe protection must be installed on all mooring lines.
▪ High-Modulus Synthetic Fiber Lines (HMPE), if used, must be deployed together with appropriate tails.
▪ Winch brake settings must be verified, tested, and meet BHP requirements.
▪ Mooring Line management plans will need to be updated to align with BHP requirements.
