The EU-MRV Regulation, a system for monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions for calling/departing European port, has been revised, and the revised regulation has been published in the EU Journal.
According to the new regulations, emissions from January 1, 2024 onward will be subject to reporting of CH₄ and N₂O in addition to CO₂. Shipowners or management companies are required to revise their current monitoring plans to comply with the new regulations and submit them to the authorities by April 1, 2024.
The regulation states that the methods for monitoring CH4 and N2O emissions shall be based on the same principles as the methods for monitoring CO2 emissions as set out in Annex I to this Regulation, with any adjustments necessary to reflect the nature of the relevant greenhouse gas.
Since many ships currently measure CO₂ emissions by multiplying fuel consumption by a coefficient, it is assumed that the same method will be used for CH₄ and N₂O in many cases. However, the details of this method have not yet been clarified and will be announced by October 2023.
