RightShip offers the 'Crew Welfare Self Assessment' as one of the tools aimed at protecting the rights and improving the welfare of crew.
Recently, there has been an increasing trend where shipowners are requested by charterers to submit the Crew Welfare Self Assessment to RightShip. Therefore, we would like to provide information about the Crew Welfare Self Assessment.
What is the Crew Welfare Self Assessment?
The Crew Welfare Self Assessment is a questionnaire provided by RightShip and you can download it for free from RightShip website.
It consists of questions related to the health of crew members, working conditions, and company policies concerning these matters.
What happens when you submit the Crew Welfare Self Assessment?
DOC Holders can submit the Crew Welfare Self Assessment by using Self-Assessment Tool. DOC holders can download their completed self-assessment to share with clients and other interested stakeholders and will be reminded to re-submit after a year.
The full content of the self-assessment submissions will not be visible to external parties. After completing the self-assessment, you will be provided a PDF of your responses via an email from RightShip. Your results will be stored in the Self-Assessment Tool, but the full content of the results nor data will be visible to third parties.
You will be prompted annually via email to update your data or ensure it is still accurate.
What is a background of receiving the submission request from charterer?
Crew Welfare Self Assessment is only voluntary, not compulsory. on the other hand, RightShip vetting criteria has been updated and RightShip strongly recommend to submit Crew Welfare Self Assessment from 1 Aug. 2023. Please refer below article for more detail.

Is the disclosed data reviewed, vetted, rated and/or filtered?
This is not a ratings-based self-assessment, you are not ranked against other operators. It is up to you to establish your level of commitment and build further from where you stand. The submitted data is not reviewed nor verified and will not affect your RightShip Safety Score, GHG Rating, Vessel Vetting process or your Dry Bulk Inspection outcomes. Anonymized, aggregated data will be used for industry wide progress reporting.
As mentioned earlier, Crew Welfare Self Assessment is not mandatory, and whether to submit it or not is at the discretion of shipowners/ship management companies. However, there is a growing trend of requests for submission due to commercial reasons.
The questionnaire for Crew Welfare Self Assessment consists of more than 40 items, and in addition to answering questions, many questions also require supporting documents. It may be challenging to respond to sudden submission requests.
Whether you choose to submit it or not, reviewing the questionnaire may serve as a reference for future actions.
