The definition of HRA (High Risk Area) is depend on the group which define the area, and even the name is different. So that it sometimes makes confusion when discuss this matter between owners and charterers.
Here, we explain about HRA or similar which relate piracy and/or war.
①HRA which is set by shipping industry group in Indian Ocean, Somalia and Gulf of Aden.
Industry group means BIMCO/ICS/INTERTANKO/INTERCARGO/OCIMF. In general, HRA means this area. This HRA is sometimes called as 'HRA defined by BMP5', however there is no specific HRA definition in BMP5.

As we have informed in this article, Shipping Industry noticed that they decided to remove HRA at Indian Ocean from 1 Jan. 2023, considering the improve of piracy situation in the region.
②War Risk Navigation Limitations by Insurance company
Insurance companies set their navigation limitation areas which is based on Listed Area by Joint War Committee. For more detail, please contact your insurance company. When ships enter this area, insurance companies take predetermined measures such as change premium rate.
③Warlike/High Risk Area by ITF
This areas are set by ITF to protect seafarer's safety and/or their right. When ships call this area, there will be bonus for seafarers and they will have right to refuse such voyage, etc.
