When ships anchor/berth long time, biofouling often occur by mussels, marine slimes and/or barnacles etc.
For avoiding biofouling, owners/charterers sometimes decide to conduct short navigation. How it should be done properly?
Depending on the paint maker and type of anti-fouling paint, the following are generally recommended methods.
- Short navigation should be conducted before ship's staying period exceed the recommended limit of stay. The recommended limit of staying period is set by paint maker, and depend on the ship's staying area.
- Navigating with NCR or the speed which is advised by paint maker.
- About 6 hours running is required
If you conduct Short Navigation for avoiding biofouling, it is recommended to follow ship's paint maker's advice.
* Short navigation has almost no effect on hull on painted surfaces under the water surface to which anti-fouling paint is not applied.
