SOx emissions from ships has regulated by MARPOL Annex VI.
Total amount of SOx emissions depend on the sulfur content in the fuel and it is necessary to switch to a fuel with the required sulfur content according regulation when entering the emission control area(ECA).
A fuel exchange procedure is provided on board which describes the procedure for ensuring that switching is completed before entering the ECA and important elements including the following are required.
1. Sulfur content of fuel currently in use
2. Sulfur content used in ECA
3. Fuel capacity in setlings, service tanks and fuel pipes
4. Transfer pump capacity
Based on this information, the time required for fuel switching will be calculated to prepare for entry into the regulated sea area.
As one of the methods to calculate the fuel switching time, Lloyd's Register Group FOBAS has released a simple calculator, so I would like to share this as the attachment.
